Chatbot helps people to solve their problems via conversational UI. Our chatbots are launched on LINE — the most poplar messaging app in Taiwan. I’ve participated in 3 healthcare-related chatbot projects — 2 hospital chatbots that help people register and track their diagnosis result, and 1 chatbot for Taiwan Centers of Disease Control for people check disease information.

In order to develop a character to each chatbot, we held “character design workshop“ for each client to collect their thoughts and ideas. Through participation design, we could get first-hand thoughts and feedbacks and could get to know them further. Instead of simply collecting their answers, we wanted to know “the reason behind the answer”. For example, if they said “I like a pair of glasses“, we would not just write down the answer, rather to ask them “why glasses?“, and they said “because it makes the character looks more professional“ . By knowing the reason behind the answer, we could design a character that matched more of what they really want. The thing they wanted was not a pair of glasses, but something made the character looked “professional“.
